Romance Titles WIN!

The Recession Gives Romance Reading a BoostAccording to the New York Times, romance books are showing about the only growth in the book industry these days. Is it because readers want to escape reality? Harlequin reported that fourth-quarter earnings were up 32 percent over the same period a year earlier, and the romance category overall is up 7 percent. Or maybe it’s because romance readers are voracious and see reading as a necessity rather than just a pleasure.
These numbers include not only category romance (like Harlequin), but a booming market for both series and stand-alone romances from mainstream publishers. Romance readers tend to need less RA in libraries.
Romance readers also still tend to lead in the use of e-books.

Romance Readers Love E-Books!

Fictionwise, a major ebook retailer with total 2008 U.S. sales of at least $100M that was recently acquired by Barnes & Noble, has just acknowledged that 50 percent of its sales are romances (Wall Street Journal, 3/6/09).
There has been some discussion about the merits of various e-readers at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books including e-reader reviews and places to purchase
While Kindle is good, romance readers are stuck with only books available on Amazon. The Sony 770 seems to be the best reviewed recently. Also information on price-shopping

Romance IS real literature!
For those of you still dismissing your romance collections as a pile of fluff, anti-feminist, sheer titillation, or other derogatory terms, I give you Teach Me Tonight. Recent topics have included:

There has to be something to the romance genre. It must reflect something we need in society. While I would never equate being on a bestseller list with quality, it does say something about the culture. Bravo to Teach Me Tonight for exploring!

The rise of erotica and dark/urban fantasy may be spurring more historicals with more sexual exploration. While similar to that found in the "bodice ripper" romances of the 70s and 80s, there is always a twist.
Inspirational author M.L. Tyndall's The redemption is not what you'd expect from an inspirational romance. Here, the author uses sexual content to illustrate the hero's truly evil ways and how loving guidance turns him to faith and true love.
