The Reader's Advisor Online Blog

I think I find this blog to be one of the most useful for reader's advisors that I've ever found. And small wonder! It's the free part of Reader's Advisor Online, which is the electronic part of Genreflecting and all of its spinoffs. If you work in a library and you do Reader's Advisory work. Subscribe via your newsreader. Do It Now!!!

Publishers Weekly has listed 150 titles in its Best Books of the Year article.

I don't know what Cynthia Orr bases her bestseller mashups on but I do like them as well as USA Today for giving a reader's advisor the true scoop on what people are asking for. Bestseller Mashup

Smart Bitches, Trashy Books

Smart Bitches, Trashy Books

I always hesitate with this title. I know, I know, don't be a prude. I just...well, I just love the blog. Fewer links to downright guffaw humor than SF Signal, but the cleverness and snippiness just kills me.

Whether you hate Romance or love it, you have to admit some of the covers - especially from the 80s, are totally snark-worthy as in:
Mind-Blowing Covers! As in “They Gave Me Nausea and a Fever”

And sometimes they even advocate for a real cause! Link-o-lation: Fun, Games, and Panties of Protest

The author is Icelandic and fortunately writes in English. Fortunate for most of us anyway. Unless you only read Icelandic. In which case not so good. Worth a look for the subject matter and author's name alone!

Notes from
Saricks, Joyce. "Nonrequired Reading for the Reader's Advisor." Booklist 10/1/2007, p. 30:

Some things are "must read for my job" reads:
reviews
newsources
email
libraryland

Other things are "should reads" because you enjoy them
pleasure reading, listening, viewing

The problem is how to balance them

1. You can't read everything

2. Learn to read a book in 10 minutes at http://bookbitch.com/READERS%20ADVISORY.htm (about 1/3 of the way down the page.) Even Saricks isn't that fast, it usually takes her 30 minutes. This technique is most useful for non-fiction. Learn enough to share with readers

3. Reader's Advisory is collaborative - talk to your co-workers

4. Skim blurbs, pump fans, watch ads for bestsellers

5. Keep a tbr, not a stack of books at home. If it's importan enough you'll see it on your list and go back

6. Remember to put aside time for non-required "sanity reading"
